by endodontic implant procedures. In cases of intentional reimplantation, such as that of the upper impacted canine shown in Fig. 13-21, the tooth should be removed from the impacted position only after the new socket has been prepared. The tooth should be positioned in its new socket and checked for alignment and proper occlusion. Then root canal treatment and drilling of the site for the pin should take place.

Reimplantation plus endodontic implant stabilization can be very useful after accidental injuries to teeth. Fig. 13-22 shows a tooth that was accidentally knocked out and reimplanted later in the ordinary

Fig. 13-19. Sometimes pins can be passed through the tooth obliquely to help support it. Here an extremely mesially tipped mandibular second molar stabilized by an endodontic stabilizer acting as another root is seen. (From Linkow, L. I.: Pin implants, Prom. Dent. 3:4-15, 1968.)

way. Two years later progressive root resorption had loosened the tooth considerably, and endodontic implant stabilization was attempted. The resorption stopped and the tooth became firm again, although little bone reconstruction occurred.

Fig. 13-21. Endodontic stabilizers are also used commonly in conjunction with reimplanted teeth. A, A preoperative x-ray shows a palatally impacted canine and deciduous canine. The deciduous canine was removed and the impacted canine was surgically removed and reimplanted into the socket of the deciduous tooth. At the same time the displaced lateral incisor was forcibly pushed into alignment. B, Both teeth were endodontically stabilized (immediate postoperative x-ray). C, Three years later the x-ray shows the teeth still functioning well. (From Orlay, H. G.: Endodontic implants, J. Oral Implant Transplant Surg., pp. 44-53, 1965.)
