of the abutment teeth must first be prepared, and their castings should be fitted and soldered together prior to the implant insertion. Advance fabrication is extremely important, even though the blade implant is so much more stable than a screw. To pre-vent complications, the time elapsing between implant insertion and final cementation of the fixed partial denture must be minimized.

This patient's teeth were unattractive and in poor condition (Fig. 11-50). His remaining mandibular teeth were prepared for full crown restorations. After the castings were fitted over the abutment teeth and all occlusal adjustments made, local anesthesia was given, one side at a time. The first blade was inserted in the right mandibular molar area (Fig. 11-51) and the second in the left (Fig. 11-52). The sites were then sutured closed (Fig. 11-53), and a prefabricated temporary splint lined with a soft tissue conditioner was placed over the abutment teeth and implant posts (Fig. 11-54).

To provide ample abutment support, a double-posted blade implant was placed into the alveolar
