With only one tooth remaining, blades should be inserted around the arch with as much symmetry as possible, fig. 12, to give better support to the fixed prosthesis, figs. 13, 14, 15. A post-operative x-ray, fig. 16.

Severely periodontally involved teeth can often be removed by hand with the bridgework still attached and intact, figs. 17, 18. Over-retained periodontally involved teeth involve the labial rather than the lingual plate of bone as is clearly seen in fig. 19.
