FOREWORD

What can anyone say about Dr. Leonard Linkow that is not already known? His inventiveness, his unusual vitality, and, of course, his thorough experience are widely known.

I felt really elated and quite happy when Dr. Linkow asked me to write the foreword to his book. The problem is that the few lines usually allowed in a foreword are not adequate.

Dr. Linkow's practice of implantology goes back several years and to this he has dedicated all his energy and exceptional resourcefulness. After having built up a sizable following in general stomatology (in addition to many articles, in 1962 he published Full Arch Fixed Oral Reconstruction), Dr. Linkow expanded his knowledge of implantology from subperiosteal implants (which were his starting point and still bear the mark of his individuality) to the endosseous implants which, during the last several years, have been his main object of interest and scientific application.

The present volume, which no doubt will attain its merited success, is unique in its field; it is surely

the most complete, as it reviews all the principal techniques in use and gives a detailed description of Dr. Linkow's own techniques, made more interesting by a great number of photographs.

In this book the author's main idea is clearly revealed: Implantology is an important as well as a difficult undertaking. In order to be successful, one must keep abreast of all the various techniques, for not all cases can be treated by just one method. A well-prepared operator must be able to judge correctly when to use a subperiosteal or an endosseous implant and must be able to select the method best suited to a particular case and a particular area.

Dr. Linkow has presented his material with great clarity and authority in a manner consistent with his professional commitment to implantology.

In the future, I earnestly hope that this field will attract other colleagues, who, like Dr. Linkow, will continue to develop new techniques and skills leading to the further success and acceptance of implantology.
